Something tells me that your mobo will only support 95w CPUs, struggling to get confirmation on that though.

So play it safe and buy one of these
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-phenom-ii-x4-960t-black-edition-s-am3-30ghz-8mb-cache-95w-retail

And one of these
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/be-quiet!-dark-rock-advanced-bk014-cpu-cooler-lga775-1155-1156-1366-am2-am2plus-am3-754-940

And then OC your new CPU... Have fun

by the way it may also be worth you upgrading your mobo to a DDR3 compatible model... something like this
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-m5a78l-m-usb3-amd-760g-s-am3plus-ddr3-sata-ii-3gb-s-raid-sata-pcie-(x16)-graphics-on-board-micr

and buy some of this to go with it..
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-(2x2gb)-corsair-ddr3-xms3-classic-pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-9-9-9-24-150v

So you could upgrade your CPU, MOBO and RAM for £200 which will give your system a good performance boost.

Not much of an upgrade from his Phenom ll. Personally, I wouldn't upgrade to anything less than a Core i5 or Phenom ll X6 if he wants to keep his current motherboard.
