I'm gonna upgrade PC this Christmas, and Im thinking of getting a new cpu, some people say i should go for i3 or i5, but other people says i should go for amd phenom ii x4 or x6.

Considering the fact that Intel sockets quickly get outdated, should i still go for intel? Specifically the i3-2100 or i5-2500k? Or should i just go for a cheaper Phenom II x4 965?

Im not a hardcore gamer, i only play games moderately such as (NBA 2k12, Bulletstorm, and Battlefield 3 at Low settings)

By the way, i only have a GTS 250 Video Card :(

Core i5 2500k - One of the best processors ever released. Up there with the Q6600 and the Athlon64s

If you get one with a Z68 motherboard, when the time comes, you can drop a 22nm Ivy Bridge processor right in there, no BIOs update, no messing. Just drag and drop, literally :D

And if you have a GTS250 upgrade it to something like a 6850. They're around £110. Or a GTX 460 1gb, which are a similar price. MASSIVE perfomance boost.

Thanks for the suggestions guys..

I'm really on a tight budget and thus I was planning to get only an i3-2100 so I could upgrade my video card to a HD 6770. But now it seems like i should just go for the i5-2500k and just postpone my video card upgrade till next year..

Does that seem like a better option deadjon? Or should I just persist with getting an i3-2100 and a HD 6770?

An i3 2100 will be a perfect match for a 6770 to be honest.

A 2500k and a 250gts will be a HUGE mismatch xD

Sounds like you have it sussed, if you dont intend to OC.

Take heed to my advise to go Z68 though. Dropping an Ivy Bridge in will save you a ton on your next upgrade.

Edit - If If you spend an extra £35 or $50 roundabout you can get a 6850. An extra 160 cores, faster clocks and a wonderful 256bit memory bus. Just a thought :p

Allright then, looks like i should just go for the i5-2500k and an ASUS or Gigabyte z68.. Thanks jon :D

Woah woah xD

I suggested going Z68, but what about your GTS250...it needs upgrading, BADLY.

If you cant afford to upgrade that and venture into 2500k land, I suggest you go with your original plan and go i3 with a new gfx card. The 250GTS will be a massive bottleneck and your i5 will die of boredom xD

OH crap, looks like i took it the other way around.. Will i3 be better than Phenom x4's in gaming though? If that's the case an i3 + z68 + HD 6770 would be my choice then.. right?

An i3 2100 beats Phenom II x4 in Dual or Tri threaded games. In games with 4 threads there is a difference of < 1 fps xD, so impossible to see. If you can, you could go for a i3 2120 which will beat the x4s in everything at the moment.

Edit - and the answer is yes. Z68 - i3 - 6770

Haha, good man. The 6870s are wonderfull cards, and they will have come down in price by then I think....you may want to watch for the 7850 and 7870 that will be release in feb/march time. They're going to be priced like 6870s and powered like 6970s :p
