Video Editing/3D Modelling/Gaming Computer

I'm looking to put something together that I can use, mostly for my film stuff and 3d modelling, and for gaming. I'm not looking for the top range stuff, but I do need something that will at least get the job done and not break the bank on my behalf. I'll be building it part by part over the next month or so, buying parts as I can afford them. Since I haven't done this in a long time (I've been using laptops for about 3 years...) I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I've done a little research, and I know I want to run it on an i5-2000k. I've also had a look and found an Azza Spartan case, and an ASUS EAH5750 GPU. What sort of mobo would I need for this, and what amount of power in the PSU would I need? I also suppose I'd need to use at least DDR4 or DDR5 ram so I'm not bottlenecking the whole system. Also, would that GPU be good enough? I want to run two screens, possibly three, though I know I'd have to go either SLI or Crossfire for that, so i'll leave that for now. :??:

Any help would be appreciated. :p

"I also suppose I'd need to use at least DDR4 or DDR5 ram so I'm not bottlenecking the whole system"

There is no such thing as these types of RAM for system memory. You are thinking of Graphics RAM, or GDDR4 or 5.

For your uses, I'd suggest going with an i7-2600k CPU, and at a minimum, a 6870 GPU w/2GB of memory for 3 screens.

Thanks. I will admit, that was confusing me a little...

So what is your budget for this system. Also, list out the components you need.

I only need the tower. I have screens, keyboard/mouse etc. I'm probably going to want to spend up to about $1000.

Do you think I will need an i7? I'm probably wrong, but from what I know (or at least from what I've heard) i7's are factory overclocked i5's and don't seem to produce much more power for the price.

My main problems are this: I'm not sure what motherboard I should be using for the cpu and gpu I want and the power level I should be looking at for the psu.

Including what you've told me, what I'm looking at at the moment is:

CASE: Azza Spartan $80
CPU: INTEL CORE I5 2500K $220
GPU: XFX ATI Radeon HD6870 2GB DDR5 $255
MOBO: ASRock's Z68 Extreme4 $185
RAM: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 $100
PSU: Not sure
HDD: Probably just a WD Black or Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB OS drive
COOLER: not sure

Thanks. I hadn't seen that before posting my reply - was still looking over all my notes and getting prices. I'll have a look at what you've put together there and see where that takes me. Thanks for your help so far though.

I think you're a bit confused about processors, which is fine, because this stuff can be confusing. i7 is not just an overclocked i5. Maybe what you are think about is the "k" version of processor( such as i5 2500k and i7 2600k) which are overclockable versions of i5 2500 and i7 2600s respectively.

Not true. i7's are much more powerful in that they have hyperthreading enabled. So while an i5 can process 4 threads simultaneously, an i7 can process 8 threads.

There are three main points to your build that address your use for it:
1. Memory. You need 16gb
2. CPU. You need the extra processing power of the i7
3. GPU. For a three screen system, you need 2GB of video ram.
