Sli 460, or upgrade to better single card?

Okay my new gaming build at the moment is running an Evga GTX460 SE, 4gb ram, 1tb hdd, Core i5 2500k and a 650 watt power supply. I originally planned on upgrading the ram, then the power supply, and eventually put another GTX460 in for good measure. I'm wondering if instead of puting in another 460, if i would get better results from a GTX 580, or even the GTX460 2win (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=128507&CatId=3669). Now i now that either one of these upgrades is going to require more that my current 650 watt psu and I do plan on upgrading that first and foremost....I'm just wondering if a single higher end card would be a smart move?

thanks

More about upgrade single card
  1. What is the make/model of your PSU?

    What reosultion is your monitor?

A GTX460 SLI is still a very powerful combo. You could easily max out games. But theirs always the problems with drivers and which game supprots SLI/Crossfire.I would suggest going with a more powerful single card.Depending on what type of psu you have, usually a 650watt is enough for a GTX460 SLI or a single GTX580.

    Whats your budget?
  2. My Psu is an ULTRA 550 watt (thought it was 650 for some reason lol) LSP550. At the moment I'm looking to upgrade the Psu to a modular one with more watts(obviously) and also go with a GTX580.

In the end when i price out buying one GTX 580 and a PSU to match it'll be a bit more that another GTX 460 n psu...but well worth the money given the performance I'll be getting (from what i read anyways).

but to answer your question...i guess I dont really have a budget, I'm shooting mainly for performance.
  3. Although it isn't widely used you can always PhysX the GTX460 with the GTX580.Just something to think about.

I good thing to always look for is futureproofing.Get a big enough PSU so that you can later SLI another GTX580 if you want.

    Here's a good Modular PSU.

    Corsair 850watt/Modular $165=$155 after MIR + $6 Shipping

Just FYI I appreciate your user name Purple :)
also WOW good price for 580 AND PSU? Good find there much appreciated.
Yeah I'm tring to future proof my rig for as long as i can, but I'm getting tired of sacrificing graphics for fps.....I have become a graphics whore. Thank Skyrim and RAGE for the sudden obsession.
  5. I think the price for the GTX580 is a bit excessive. The 6970 is only $365 and it's only 5-10fps behind the GTX580 in all the benchmarks.
