Sapphire 6870 brand new, system lock up while gaming. NO BSOD.

My system is,

CPU: Q8400 2.6 ghz
GPU: Sapphire 6870
RAM: 4gb DDR2
MOBO: GA-EP35-D3SL
PSU: 650 watt corsair
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Driver: 11.6

the temps on this thing never exceed 73 degrees Celsius.

Now the lockup has only happened once, and I was playing bad company 2 all on highest settings, dx11. All of a sudden the computer totally froze, I was hearing the RRRRRRRRRRR sound when a game freezes you know?

I waited a good 30 seconds, but there was no BSOD.

I just upgraded from a 4890, which uses more power. I shouldnt be having problems. Now I know this has only happened once, but I'm just trying to cover bases here in case it happens again.

Should I maybe try drivers 11.5? or .4?

if upgrading from another ati card, you should use driversweeper to remove any trace of the old drivers. You should also check that your motherboard has the latest BIOS update.

My motherboard is flashed to the latest update, and I used ccleaner to clean registery, delete ati installations, and I physically removed all the ati folders. I cannot download driver sweeper, as there are no links on the guru 3d website for the newest version.

I'm having this exact issue with exactly the same card (Sapphire HD 6870). Difference being it keeps happening to me, probably once or twice a week. Robert, if you're still around did this ever get resolved?

Scratch what I said, even though this is an old thread.

The 6870 for some reason during Catalyst update 12.01 could install new drivers along side the old ones and cause freezing as if the card was getting hot, use a program like Driver Sweeper and get rid of everything ATI, restart your system and let Windows install the default drivers for your GPU then install the latest driver package, at this time 12.8. Then restart your system and you should be good to go.

IF you don't want to do that/tried but didn't work, Battlefield: Bad Company 2's Punk Buster HATES GPU monitoring programs like Sapphire TRIXX, MSI Afterburner, etc.. TURN OFF/EXIT all programs like those mentioned and try the game again.
