Just took over a Server at work that I have very little familiarity with it and I have a few questions - listed below the specs.
Server: Intel S5520HC
CPUs: Dual Intel E5620 Xeons
Balanced Memory: 18GB filling both banks (all 6 Slots are used in each Bank) / Triple Channel DDR3 (3GB Each) PC3-10700H
^ Using CPU-Z it looks like every other slot has either 2B/1B adding up to 18GB total.
Bios Rev Date: 5/6/2010
OS: WinServer 2008 R2 (Raid 1/5 Managing HyperV) ---> (3GB Ram for the host system)
HyperV-1 WinServer 2008R2 --> Running Exchange/Storage (9GB Ram Allocated)
HyperV-2 WinServer 2008R2 --> Running SQL and Web Services (4GB Ram Allocated) (only running 32bit)
HyperV-3 Running Legacy Windows 2k Server for Historical Data. (2GB Ram Allocated)
*Note - Legacy 2K server will be sunset on Jan 1, 2013 - releasing those resources.
1. I was looking to upgrade memory replacing all the Triple channel 1GB Ram with 4GB Ram Triple Channel - Increasing total memory to 36GB. I assume you have to use the same type and speed memory? Is there anything that I should be wary of when purchasing additional memory such as mixing brands (Kingston vs Crucial etc)?
Memory Link Example --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
2. Are my current memory configurations problematic? My reason for increasing memory was to for better optimization for the SQL and Web Services - but was unsure what the Host Server needs were - should that be increased significantly as well?
Any help from those that have a much better understanding than myself is warmly welcomed.
