First time building a PC from scratch, here are my proposed components.

So this is my component list, I'd love it if you guys could give it a quick look through and see if I might have made any major screw ups while compiling it. I bow to those wiser than I in these matters.

So basically, I want to know if you guys see any errors where I'm putting things together that should not be put together AND since the Hitachi Deskstar Optical HD comes bare and the LG Black Multi Burner comes OEM, what extra cables do I need to buy for those, if any?

    but why build with socket 1366 when the newer sandy bridge processors are cheaper and will spank it ?
  2. While doing my research I got the impression that 1366 systems are more pliable when it comes to overclocking. Then again, what do I know.

    If I were to change it to an i5 Sandy Brige processor, what else would I need to change, besides the motherboard?
  3. The socket 1155 cpu's are definitely the overclocking kings . They have finer internal circuits [ 32 nano meter ] so they run cooler and faster .

    The smart build for a gamer is
    2500K
    z68 motherboard
    2 x4 gig of 1600 Mhz RAM . This must be 1.5 volt or less
    a good 750 watt psu for a single GTX 580

    If you may add another GTX 580 in SLI then the 1000 watt unit makes sense , but since you will max out any game on a 1080p monitor with a single card , this is very hard to recommend

    The corsair H50 water cooler is not as good as a top end air cooler . Subsequent models are much better , but because socket 1155 cpu's run so much cooler that previous generations very few people are using more than a mid range cooler.
    The coolermaster Hyper 212 , or Xigmatek 1283 series .
    And they are getting insane overclocks

  4. The overall architecture is more pliable, without question, but Sandy Bridge CPUs themselves are, if anything, more overclockable, and faster to start out with. And cheaper. And more upgradeable. Switching to Sandy Bridge wouldn't require a change of RAM, but it would be a very good idea. (quasi-required) I'd go with an 8GB kit, something 2x4GB and rated for 1.5V.
  5. Ok, I was hoping to build a system with 12GB or RAM considering I'm also going to be using my system for HD video editing and animation. So, any recommendations for that? I selected a Triple-Channel Mobo originally because it could easily give me the 12GB I required and still have another 3 memory slots that I could use should, for weird some reason, 12GB is not enough.
  6. Bloomfield has two advantages, triple channel memory - if your applications can take advantage of it - and more PCIe lanes.

    Otherwise, Sandy Bridge rules.

    I'm planning on doing high quality HD video editing and animation with this system, too, not just gaming. I was hoping to keep my RAM at 12GB to get the maximum performance from the various programs I'm going to be using.

    Since I'm new to building my own PC, what is the main difference between getting a double-channel memory mobo verses a triple-channel mobo?
  8. for HD video editing and encoding ] you can use 4 x 4 gig of RAM for a total of 16 gig

    This is also one of the applications where its worth paying the extra for a 2600K processor which can hyperthread .
  9. Ok, I'm compiling an updated parts list using your suggestions. In the mean time, since the optical hard drive comes "bare" and the Blu-Ray burner multi drive is OEM, that means I just need to buy 2 more SATA III cables, right?

    Also, I was going with the H50 water cooling unit for the duel purposes of cooling and reducing clutter in the case so the airflow would be better. Is that a valid concern?

    In theory triple channel memory is supposed to be better, but most real world tests have not proven this to be true.

    If you aren't in a rush you could wait for Intel's new high end socket LGA 2011 to be released. This is replacing 1366 and will support their newer high end CPU's. I would absolutely not recommend buying 1366 as that line is towards the end of its life, (that means future upgrades will be costly and probably require a complete rebuild).

    If you need the PC now though I'd definitely go with a 2600K chip and 16Gb of Ram. Just make sure the motherboard you get supports that much ram, and also be aware you probably won't be able to run at faster speeds, but this shouldn't be a concern for you anyway.

    I have the same graphic card too, I just wish I did high end video editing to really stress it out. It's very quiet!
