probably RS232 (serial) maybe parallel, maybe nothing, although they have to have a way of connecting to the chip and pin machines.

Have to ask, why?

Depends on the register's age/maker. Some registers have propitiatory interfaces for obvious security reasons, which means no fooling around. I have also seen some using Ethernet which is really bad. So to answer your question, Yes you can connect external devices to SOME cash registers but even then who is to say that it supports your usb device or it's format.

It depends on the age of the machine, hardware and what os is running, I've serviced some really old machines that have 10BASE2 (Coax), RS232,RS422,IEEE 1284 (LPT) and run DR-DOS, MS-DOS, FreeDOS, Win3.xx, some machines I have also come across run WinXP embedded and have ethernet, wifi, keyboard PS/2 ports, and internal USB ports and serial ports of all flavours, most of the machines I've come across have PC hardware, some machines also use WinCE, Android, linux and use a mixture of x86 and ARM hardware and there are the custom hardware types of standalone till which are like oversized calculators with till printers and cash draws.

Uh huh, I can see it now. Sales clerks at the cash register with their Ipod plugged in and earphones, mindlessly scanning my groceries. Probably already happens a lot more than I realize.
