Ethernet over phone Lines

Hello,

For basic Ethernet, apparently only four cables are necessary.

I've modified some 2 pairs phone cables ( BRGY) and and use them as lan cable and it was working fine.

I'd like to know the limit of the system. What is the importance of the twists if any?


PS the idea, is to use the phone network of an appartment block to distribute internet. No phone carrier will ever connect to our system so no Tone will disturb the equipment.

The limit would be the length. It shouldn't exceed 100 Meters i.e. ~320feet.
Each pair is twisted to reduce electromagnetic interference and cross talk between pairs of wires.
