Zalman ZM-RSSC no 5.1 optical

I have the Zalman usb sound card connected to my Asus a52 laptop and then into my home theater via the optical port. I have a fibre optic cable connecting it. I have tried VLC and zoomplayer but it never sends 5.1 only 2 channels. I have all the codecs.

It can get 5.1 with desktops connected via optical but not usb sound card through laptop. What can I do?

Optical can only carry 5.1 audio in the case of Dolby/DTS audio formats. No other 5.1 format can be used with optical for bandwidth reasons. If your audio is not encoded in eitehr of these formats, you are limited to 2.0/2.1, period.
