Are 400/500 Series running too hot?

Some cards are hotter than others and some use more or less power than others it all depends which cards we are talking about.
It sounds to me like you have been talking to a Rabid ATI/AMD fanboy.

for cards that based on GF100 (GTX480, GTX470, GTX465 and some mobile part i based on the chip believe) indeed quite hot when under full load but other than that it is not. for the 500 series nvidia already solved heat the problem. my GTX460 is quite cool when idle (35c) and when running furmark the temp never pass 70c as oppose to my previous GTS250 which can hit 80c+ when running furmark

Best solution

avoid GTX465. that one is based on cut down version of GF100. in fact GTX460 (1GB with 336SP version) is better than GTX465 in term of performance. btw GTX560 /GTX560Ti considered as mid-range card. GTX570 and above are high end.
