Is this optical drive fast enough?

I'm looking to replace my dvd-rom optical drive with a blu-ray, and noticed that the dvd read speeds on the blu-ray drives are almost ubiquitously 16x. This is two revolutions slower than my current drive. Thats perfectly fine with me so long as the 16x speed is sufficent to install dvd based software. I've tried an extensive on-line search for the answer to this to no avail. Can anyone help me? Is 16x dvd read speed on a blu-ray optical drive fast enough for dvd based software? Thanks!
