Trouble removing Windows 7 Antivirus 2012

A friend of mine contracted the Windows 7 Antivirus 2012 adware thing and I've spent the last six hours trying to fix the damage this thing did to his laptop. I've removed this before from about six other computers and it worked just fine, but this time I've run into a few problems. After deleting the registry entries and files I was asked to delete, EXE files won't open now. Not only that, but in the absolutely rare occasion that something DOES open it freezes up whenever I try to use it or close it. I've tried a couple different EXE registry fixes to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm running out of patience.

Most of the time I find booting into safe mode and running Combofix removes the problem, running Malwarebytes afterwards cleans up any bits left by Combofix.
