Replace or upgrade current SLI setup

One of my dual 8800 gt cards is getting too hot causes shutdown at the start of any video game. I pulled it out and the remaining card works fine. Have been running setup for at least 3 years without a hitch.

Curious if just replacing with another 8800 gt could be improved upon if I spent $300-$500 on newer single card or same amount on newer SLI set up.

AMD 180 Opteron dual core
8 GB Corsair RAM
ASUS A8N SLI Motherboard

You would see a significant improvement if you upgraded to soemthing like a GTX560ti($240).It's about 5 times as powerful as a 8800GT SLI.

Is your CPU O.C.'d at all? If not what is it's current speed?

No it isn't, a single GTX560 gives about the same frame rates as an 8800GT SLi setup.

I'm sorry it was an exageration.

But they don't exactly get the same frame rates.This was the only benchmark I could find for comparison but I can only imagine newer games would show a GTX560ti gain more.

Before I gave one of my 8800GT's to my friends son I ran them in my 2600k rig to get a baseline for comparison with the GTX560Ti's that I replaced them with.

I see.So maybe the OP would be better off with a GTX570 or GTX580.

Assuming his CPU isn't holding him back.

Although, he didn't ask for a performance increase, just a replacement due to a card overheating.

That's up to the OP, I'm quite happy with the GTX560's in SLi.
