Having trouble getting monitor to display

ok so im stumped. im trying to set up a second monitor ( an old viewsonic vg700). when i first plug it in or turn it on it displays my desktop as it should for a few seconds then the screen goes black, it doesn't go to sleep or give a message about not receiving a signal just goes black. its not the cord because when i switch cords with the other monitor the viewsonic does the same thing and the other monitor continues to display fine, any suggestions?


OS: win7 64 bit
graphics card: radeon 6950
