Forum Systems : New Build Intel i7 - Any one tried it yet!?

Hello

I am working with several project for the time being and it seems that I'll do such a thing a lot from now on.

Most work are encoding files using video editing software such as Premiere or Vegas or Video converters like WinAVI

Right now I am using Dell-Precision 390 - Core Du Quad - Q6600 - 2.4 GHz with 4 GB Ram.

Encoding an hour consume about 15-18 minutes.

I was wondering if someone tried Intel i7 processors to advise about it and whether or not it may reduce the encoding time which will help me a lot.

Plenty of people have tried the new i7's, and though I'm not one of them, I can assure you that you'll cut your encoding times by quite a bit if you upgrade. A 2600k is more than 3x as powerful as the Q6600 as far as encoding is concerned, and that's at stock.

An i7 2600 would result in a significant drop in time on that, it gets more done per clock cycle and its clock speed is significantly higher than that old Q6600. Im not sure if premier or vegas are able to use more than 4 threads but regardless it has vastly better single core performance than the Core 2 series did.

Single 12V rail or multiple 12V rails?

Both are 64 native.

That doesnt matter, that only determines how much memory they can use. How many threads a program can use depends on how it was written and compiled. Im not familiar enough with either of those two to know if they can use more than 4 but someone else might know.

Yes it'll use as many threads as you throw at it.

Here's a benchmark with premiere, among other programs, as well as some media encoders on 2 pages after. Results should probably be similar with vegas as premiere. http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 33-15.html

That psu isn't very good and you don't need 650w unless you're going to sli which you can't with that mobo. A good 500w would be fine and still probably too much but if you ever wanted to upgrade/OC it'll be good. I would probably say go with a seasonic, corsair or antec.
