i am soon upgrading to CF 6970 from my single on
though my mother board switches from x16 to x8 when i have two cards installed
is x8 enough bandwidth to support a 6970?

while a 790/890/990FX board for 16x/16x would have been ideal the performance difference over 8x/8x is very small. You're more likely to be held back by your CPU than PCI-E bandwidth there.
