I saw ages ago that if you somehow did something between Baldurs Gate 1 and
2 you could get a large gold suit that looked like a robot. Was this an
April fools joke or did I dream it or is it in fact real?

Any info would be very handy!

many regards

The Google search term for this is "Big Metal Unit".

It requires you play BG1, BG2 and BG2:ToB all the way and keep all the
pantaloons (kinda neutral in BG1, evil in BG2, requires you to make a
specific dialog option in ToB). Then in ToB you get a chance to forge them
into something special: The Big Metal Unit.

It is not gold. It makes you look like a golem - it's a kind of power armor
that anyone can use. Great AC (though no greater than your tanks at that
point), hefty strength bonus and a built-in unarmed attack. IIRC mages can
cast spells inside it too.

I found out to my dismay that while wearing it, I couldn't fit through the
average doorway...kinda of a pain, having to strip every time I went
through the door.
