PC component air-cooling requires good airflow thru the case. More fans is not always better as they can cause tubulence instead of smooth air flow. Simple sometimes works better than more fans. Only testing can determine what works best for a given application.

define "standard fan"


80mm or 120mm or 140mm? Adjustable speed, fixed speed, or thermally controlled? High, medium, or low RPM fans?


5 low RPM 80mm fans wouldnt move a ton of air, but 5 140mm high RPM fans would be a hurricane inside you case and would be quite loud. It really depends on the PC and the fans.

If the case is quiet then it's not overkill -- five slow fans might be better than 2 faster fans.
