I'm building a new desktop with:
XFX HD-695X-CNDC Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL

OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I'm unsure what CPU and motherboard i want, i can get these for alot cheaper than retail:
http://ark.intel.com/products/41315/Intel-Core-i7-870-Processor-(8M-Cache-2_93-GHz)
http://www.intel.com/Products/Desktop/Motherboards/DP55SB/DP55SB-overview.htm

Or i can get these at retail price:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819115072
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813157240

How big of a difference in performance will i notice while gaming if i get the cheaper cpu and motherboard? anything bad about them?

thanks

The ASRock and Core i5 2500k are better than both. The 870 is weaker and the Intel board is no as good. The 2500k also overclocks very well. There is really no comparison. And, you can upgrade to Ivy Bridge later which most likely won't be a huge jump from SB, but still upgradability. Also, Intel will be cutting off their LGA1156 line soon (if they haven't already) so you will want to use the LGA1155 where there will still be a lot of support.

Hope this helps! :)
