I have been trying to get the customize notifications
part of the taskbar to work correctly, with no success.
When I bring up that box each icon has a 3 choices -
hide/inactive, always hide, always show. When I change
the icons to my preference and exit properly (ok, apply,
ok) - the next time I start my computer my choices don't
necessarily show in the way I've chosen. And, from start
to start they also vary, ie, one time the LAN connection
icon shows and another time it's hidden. Also, although
I've marked some of them as Always hide, they're still
there when I hit the expansion arrow.

What seems to be happening is that the defaults are
restored intermittently, though I have no idea of why
(and that may not be the explanation, tho it's the best
one I've come up with).
