Run away cpu

Hello,
my cpu goes into a runaway mode where it goes from 0 to 100% stays ther for several seconds then falls to 0 then a few seconds later shoots back up to 100. The computer is in the desk top mode and is not doing any tasks. It occilates up and down like that for hours. The fan runs accordingly from low to high with the cpu. Any Idea what that might be

you could pull up your process list to see if there is anything running in the background that's causing this. could be your antivirus software or even some type of malware.

If you have an antivirus program see if it's running in the background. If you don't have an anti virus program download something like Avast for virus scanning and Malwarebytes for Trojans and other malware. You can also do ctrl+shift+esc for Windows 7 and Ctrl+alt+del to bring up task manager and look at what processes are running and how much resources it is taking up.
