Hey everyone,

(Just for a reference, this is only a computer I use when I am at home but I still would come over quite a bit and it has all my editing programmes on so I do need it to be quite good)

At home for the holidays and for Christmas my dear old mother went out and got me a computer, how nice she is (: The only thing is she remembered the i7 part, just not the graphics card or anything else (Its the thought that counts though, right?) Anyway, I open the box and start testing and find we have no graphics card and the psu is only a 650w.

I just ordered GTX 570's in SLI and now I need a power supply for it as the one in the case wasn't even branded. I was prefer as little to none on the doing the labour such as adapters etc. Specs are below

Mobo with i7 and corsair 1600mhz ram
2 TB HDD

Coming in the next 5 days
2 x GTX 570
1 x 120 GB SSD

So if you could just recommend me a good power supply with the correct amps etc It would be of great assistance since I don't really know much about PSU's. They confuse the hell out of me. Just to finish, the case isn't the biggest (bless my mother) and the PSU is on the top of the case but I'm sure putting it on the bottom wouldn't hurt if it was a little big right?

Anything will help but try not to argue (:

GTX 570 TDP= 225W~
therefore for the GPU's alone, you will require around 500W (they draw more many times)

So i think add i7 = around 130W.....

so total around 700-800 W..
Get a higher rated unit for durability and efficiency...

psu wattage calulator...

i would recommend a corsair TX 950 or better...

A pair of 570's: 30 amps peaking to 40.
OC'd CPU: 10 amps

That's 480 - 600 watts. Figure another 120 - 150 watts for the rest of the system. Considering that the high sides of the ranges are at peaks, a good 850 will do nicely.

If I were building a comparable system, I'd probably put a 1 kw PSU in it, but then, I tend to overspec PSU's in my own equipment.

Id recommend one with a single 12v rail, I had an 850W OCZ with 4 x 20A 12v rails and had problems with a similar setup to yours.

I kept getting random shutdowns but a single rail PSU solved the problem.

Make sure that case is OK for ventilation. Those 2 GPUs in SLI will chuck out a fair whack of heat, and you want to make sure your case can handle it OK. I'm guessing experience will tell you that, so bear it in mind.

One other thing...your mother went out and bought this system. Was it pre-assembled? Don't want to teach you to suck eggs, but did you check the motherboard supports SLI?

Any of these PSUs would be good for your rig:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submi...

They all are 950W-1000W PSUs with, at least, Bronze certifications. I recommend the extra power because (1) the PSU runs cooler and quieter at below 85% draw, and (2) you still have headroom for peripherals.

If your case is built for a top mounted PSU, you cannnot bo a bottom mount unless you mod your case with a dremel to cut out access for the PSU. If you are restricted to a top mount then I'd recommend this PSU:

850w+ PSU recommended for SLI GTX 570's.

Recommended brands include: Corsair, XFX, Antec, SeaSonic.

Modular PSU design would also be recommended due to the large number of cables on these higher wattage units.

Very good quality PSU :)  I use the 750w model myself. However I did find the cable lengths a little short in my CM Storm Scout case. And I wouldn't class it as a "big" case by any means :)

....just something to be aware of :)

Hey everyone,

I'm a total noob with PSU's so I had to do some research so I kind of understand it now. I couldn't find that XFX in the UK AT ALL. So could anyone recommend me a Corsair one as I seem to find them all. If someone could really help me out that would be great as I only have until Friday to put an order in to make sure it comes for Christmas. 1000w Corsair? Now, back to researching about PSU's like a nerd (:
