Hello, in 2006 I bought a dell dimension 9150 with XP. Now I want to convert it to a Ubuntu machine, preferably running 64 bit Linux.

The Dell data on my machine is sparse, but some Google searchs suggest that the Pentium 4 core 2 duo family was a 64 bit architecture.

Can anyone confirm for me if this is true

Solution
The original core family was not 64 bit the core 2 family is.. My guess is you are fine. Are you using more that 4 gigs ram? otherwise it will not matter.

Thent

There is no Pentium 4 core 2 duo family. They are different architectures.

Core 2 duo is 64 bit. Some pentium 4 chips are. Yours likely is if you purchased it in 2006.

^^ Actually, it does, due to how MMIO is handled by most motherboards. It also affects the maximum Address Space usage for Win32 applications compiled as Large Address Aware [2GB on Win32, 4GB in Win64 if LAA flag is enabled]. This is all independent of the amount of RAM actually installed by the system.
