I do hope somebody can help me. I'm currently trying to upgrade my graphics card however to fit it on my motherboard ive had to move the wireless lan card a slot along, the card will not work in the secound PCIex1. Ive moved the card back and it works fine again. Any ideas?

I'm running a Dell xps 8000 with windows 7.

PCI is funny. It seems that the first slot works because that is what the computer requires before another card can fill the second slot. It is all priority really.

yeah, i'd gathered that from other querys, but thus far no soloutions have been given. Rather than resolving the problem, is it consievble to buy a wireless card that runs on the different type of pci slot . I dont know the name of it, but it's white and approxitmely 3 inches long?

That is PCI. The black slot,( I assume you have one,) is PCIe...a much larger, faster PCI port. What is your ultimate goal for moving the ethernet card?

I need to move it to create room for my new graphics card, I have two of the really small pcie slots (about an inch long) if i could put the wireless LAN card in the other slot, i can fit the graphics card in.

Check your bios, there may be a way to disable the first slot, or change priority to get the card to work in a different one.

Oddly I have never used a PCIe x1 or x4 slot before, so I dont really know for sure, but my understanding is that you should be able to plug into any of them with no problem. Perhaps try returning the product for a better quality one that would be less picky about placement?

Best option may be to go snag an old school PCI card (not PCIe). They are generally white or black and look like this: http://www.pcislot.org/
They have either one notch in the back, or 2 notches, one in back and front.
These will tend to be older cards, but they have plenty of bandwidth for a single wireless n card, and should work fine.
