Based on the very little info you give: Use crossover version of ethernet cable between the two. Turn off firewalls.

Hi, I think you can do it as you wish.
1. Prepare a crossover cable. Cut an ethernet cable and snip the white orange and white green wires and connect them to the opposite partner.
2. Go to your network connections (in XP go to the properties of network places)on the laptop Find your wireless adapter, right click it and select bridge connection.
This will turn the wireless card on your laptop into a router, forwarding the signal to its ethernet port. Plug the crossover cable into the laptop and desktop.
After that, everything is OK.
