Need CPU Heatsink/Fan for AMD Athlon II X2 270u AM3 Socket

I am planning to buy AMD Athlon II X2 270u AM3 Socket low power CPU for my HTPC. But it is (apparently) sold only OEM. This brings me to the questions

Do I need a Heatsink and Fan for this low power CPU. It's TDP is 25W. If yes, then what would you recommend to install on ATX (or microATX) board with AM3 socket for a 25W TDP CPU? If not, do I need to make sure of certain cooling fans for my case?

  1. Here's two examples on my local craigslist: http://austin.craigslist.org/sys/2700164006.html

You can check your local craigslist for similar deals. Another gentlemen had a phenom II heatpipe cooler for only $10 yesterday. If you want to save some money, just about any socket 939, am2, or am3 stock cooler will provide adequate cooling for a low power cpu like yours. You can set the fan rpms at 1000-1500 using the smartfan setting in most bios'.
  2. But can I do without one?

No. The cpu will slowly overheat. The new athlon cpus that run on the hudson boards have a fan, and those cpus run slower than yours.
  4. Are you getting a really good price? Cause it seems quite expensive on ebay (80$) and terribly not worth it...

And by good price i mean like <30$

Cooler Master Hyper 212+ but that low end low power low heat CPU could probably run without a heastsink and fan but do not attempt based on what I claim.
  6. It is one of the few ultra low power CPUs in the market. I see it for around $60 in tigerdirect

    Thanks for the comments.
  7. The only heatsinks that might cool without a fan are the gargantuan size monsters (for lack of a better discription), but they can cost as much as your cpu. scythe and noctura make some expensive models that run $60-99.
