How do I change my router?

Hello,
I recently discovered that I am paying for a broadband speed of 100Mbs, but am limited by a 54Mbs router that was installed by At&t. Is changing my router as simple as buying it and plugging it in? Would the security be changed? I know it will have to be configured via a wired connection, but can this change affect At&t's service, if it is not authorized by them? I have experienced severe lag in multiplayer games, and it needs to be fixed.

AP router? Are you referring to a home network, computer to computer? Please don't abbreviate, I am not well versed in this subject (reason why I am asking the question).

Do the ones that are installed by AT&T come with it? There is only one box, with an Ethernet cable plugged into it.

A 2-wire router: 2701HG-B

Its more of a general question though. My question, maybe, is "Do I need anything other than this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704051) to upgrade my internet?"

Do I need a modem if I have a router? What process will I follow? Do I have to contact AT&T?

Ok, I'm getting about 1mBps download, and 400kBps upload.

Honestly though, if I could get 54mbps I would be happy.... I didn't know how slow...
