I'm tired of changing Motherboards. How long will AM3+ be supported?

OK, so I am holding out now with my my AMD AM3 chipset and my Phenom II 955 processor.

When Skyrim came out I realized I needed a better processor. Still, I think AMD will really come up with much better CPU's rather than the current FX series which really is great but not all software will utilize the 8 cores.

Now, I hate that when I bought AM3 I need to change it after a year and a half of usage to use the latest processors.

So, my question is, how long will AM3+ last? I want to know if I should upgrade or not.

I'm hoping that an AM4 will come out soon so I can upgrade to that.

I read different reports that after 2012 AM3+ will no longer be supported, so I hope I will get a more concrete feedback. If somebody can break out the AMD plan for me I would be really grateful.

You'll always have to change boards for any substantial upgrade. I would wait for ivy bridge and go with Intel.

am3+ just came out about 6 months ago, I think 2 years would be a fair estimate of its lifespan.

Computer technology moves fast and if you wish to have the latest tech then you'll have to upgrade your board fairly often.

If you have an Intel system, prepare to always change out your motherboard every year and a half, or less.

AM2+ lasted like 6yrs didn't it? I'd say you just got caught between AM2+ and AM3+.

I remember reading somewhere that AMD had a year set where they were going to kill off AM3+. Sometime in 2013 or 2014 were it won't be supported any longer.

going by amd am3+ is gonna be there last enthusiast socket. supposedly they are abandoning the traditional cpu market in favor of more specialized markets like a.r.m.
so its likely that buldozer and its dye shrink may be the last from amd for a while at least.

am2 was supposed to be the be all and end all socket for amd and that lasted less than 18 months b4 they added am2+ am3 followed the year after. so on past record you can take a guess and say less than 2 years.
am2+ may have been around since 2007 but there have been no new cpu's for it specifically for the last 3+years... i think the last 1 specificaly was the amd 6400 and early phenom cpu's.

will you be able to pick up an am3 cpu in 3 years? unlikely as there wrapping production on nearly all there cpu's now and in 3 years there likley to be a memory in the enthusiast market.

Thanks all for your replies. Judging by the comments, it looks like I can safely not worry about changing the AM3+ board if I pick one for hopefully 2 more years.

At least AMD route seems safer than the Intel route in terms of compatibility in the future for motherboards.
I'm an AMD guy till the better end. I really can't explain it, I love their products and I just have a negative attitude towards intel.

Yeah, sounds good. But I really like sticking with AMD until the end. Plus with intel, their chipsets expire every year.
