Question-Updating AMD processor

I'm not at home so I wont be able to post specifics or my dxdiag.

But I have a question to whether I would be able to upgrade my "AMD Athlon II x4 620 Quad core", to a "AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core"?

Would my motherboard support it?
I have no idea on the model of my motherboard but it has a AM3 socket.

If the upgrade is possible, will this processor be able to utilize my 8 gb of DDR2 Ram?

I'll be able to post specifics later. But if anyone could give a educated guess. Thanks ^^

EDIT** Okay I figured out which motherboard it is.

The M2N78-LA (Violet) motherboard

Just a stock motherboard that came with my HP. It's made by Pegatron, an offbranch of ASUS.

  1. the processor can use 8gb of ram, but i need to know the board so i can know if you support the 125 watt tdp
  2. ^+1 without motherboard details there is no educated guess!
  3. What they said. Also, I'd note that upgrade isn't very profound. You should just try a slight overclock.

  5. It can run up to 125watt tdp CPU's but it would be a guess if the HP BIOS works with it http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01421635&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en#N92
  6. Okay, sounds like it wouldn't work than?

Any ideas of a good/cheap gaming processor/motherboard combo that could utilize my DDR2 ram?
I don't want to spend too much on an upgrade. Just spend 400 on a gfx card+PSU last month.
