No audio connecting to hdtv

Hello,
Dell dimension 8400; windows xp sound max digital audio
trying to stream to hdtv; monitor (vga) connects and is fine, but no audio (though it plays fine to the monitor.
have tried downloading universal audio driver--hasn't help

I'm confused, are you connecting a monitor and a TV at the same time, or just the TV? If you're connecting to the TV through VGA you would need to connect the audio separately. HDMI connections can transfer both audio and video.

I realized through additional online research that my computer and/or TV would have needed an upgrade to stream. I chose a Roku box and am set up.
