Hello people. I have an issue. I am trying to play BF3 but I only get 30 FPS on low settings. Is my CPU bottlenecking my GPU?

my specs are very similar

4GB RAM @1333
AMD HD6850 1GB (about 10->15% faster than your 4870)
Phenom II 955BE
Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD
monitor i game on is 1680x1050
no overclocking

i run with BF3 graphics on auto - most settings say 'high' and get perfect framerates - never been able to feel it drop

my cpu sits at around 80% usage on all 4 cores.

I would guess that your CPU is the bottleneck. Try find a 4 core phenom II cheap if you can.

lower your resolution to 1280x800 and watch the frames fly

It's your processor, your below the recommended requirements on the game. My Phenom II X4 965/Radeon 5770 can handle the game 1080p with medium settings.

Look at this link, look where the Phenom II x2 is compared to an X4/X6 and newer processors, online multiplayer demands more cores.

My frames flew right back to where they were xD

thats odd, i just ran through bf3 at 848x480, with my specs and i was getting as high as 45fps. did you make sure you set the gpu to performance in catalyst?

if lowering the res really did not help, then the cpu would be the culprit

Yea I have everything that I can set in the Catalyst to performance or off. And changing the res doesn't change my FPS at all. I can switch from Low -> Ultra and I only lose 10 frames.

well i see the x4 645 on newegg for $99, on the phenom side they jump from the 925 to the 960t

yea I was looking at that x4 645 for 99$. Would that be a good buy that would last for another 2 years at least?

yeh dude, its a good cpu

If your ddr3 memory is running at 535 that is your problem, set it to 1333 in bios and rerun game

533x2=1066 +2 accounts for random frequency fluctuation

Changing the ddr3 helped a little bit but I am still dropping to 20 frames

the problem is your cpu isnt up to the game... your gonna be stuck in the 10-30 fps window even if you drop everything to low and run at 12/7. overclocking to 4.0 wouldnt even help you much. the game needs a tricore or better.

Maybe this will help i run a phenon l 8750 @3.0 4gigs ddr 2 1066 and gts 250 i also have a athlon2 245 @2.9, 4gigs ddr3 1333 with a identical gts 250 both are very equal in playing performance in bf3 @1080p but in a big map with lots of action the athlon drops fast whereas the tri core even though it is first gen never skips a beat.
Both av about 25-35 fps game play. Your cpu is holding you back with that 4870
