Video Production/DAW PC upgrade questions

Forum Systems : Homebuilt Video Production/DAW PC upgrade questions

Word :    Username :

I'm planning to upgrade my DAW/video production computer.

Current specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.5GHz
Motherboard: Asus P5Q
RAM: 4 GB RAM (Corsair)
HDD: 127 GB Western Digital 10k RPM
Video: Quadro FX 1800
Sound 1: SB Audigy sound card for Windows sound
Sound 2: Presonus Firebox external audio card for production
PSU: 800w (Corsair)
...plus assorted peripherals including my studio monitors, 2.1 windows sound system, printer, dongles, etc.

For the upgrade, I'll be changing the CPU, mobo, and RAM, switching to a SSD boot drive, and moving from Win XP SP3 to Win 7 64-bit.

Upgraded specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.4GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD5
RAM: 8GB (2 x 4GB) G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series
HDD: 120GB Intel 320 Series SSD 2.5" SATA II
Sound 1: same as current
Sound 2: same as current
PSU: same as current

Now, a few questions:

My external audio interface plugs in via firewire. It's important that my motherboard has the Texas Instruments firewire
interface. After some digging I found that Gigabyte's 1155 boards should have the T.I. built in. Am I right on this
or should I call up Gigabyte direct and find out?

I also have two hard drives (not SSDs) I use for data storage totalling 750GB. In order to get Win 7 to see these (they were
formatted under Windows XP) I have to mount the volumes and drive letters, right?

Finally, I'm going to try and sell the old CPU/Motherboard/RAM. Do you think I could grab about $220 total once it's all
out the door? ~$120 for the CPU, ~$80 for motherboard, ~$20 for RAM.

I guess that's all I have for now. If you have any comments or feedback on the upgraded hardware for before I buy it,
I'd appreciate those as well.

Thanks for reading!
