I bought Turbo Tax and SanDisk Micro Cruzer from Office Depot last
Thanksgiving and sent in the rebate fome (Office Depot printed) in the
same day. I received a postcard five weeks later that claimed that
"Your Submission did not include an original UPC from a qualifying
SanDisk product". I called SanDisk rebate center and they said SanDisk
Micro Cruzer is *NOT* qualified for rebate and asked me to contact
Office Depot (you know the rest of the story).
I should have known better since the only file (encrypt.exe) in SanDisk
contained a virus (caught by Sophos). Lesson learned, you could never
trust rebate even if it is printed in black-and-white (I kept rebate,
UPC copies as instructed).

While not right, I stopped buying things based on getting a rebate. For big
numbers I send the rebate in with a return receipt. For the rest I just
pray a lot. I'm still waiting for a rebate from SanDisk and one from Nikon.

I too ignore rebates. I even mention that to salesmen when they try to
pitch them, "You get a $100 rebate on this..." I reply, "BULLSHIT!" In
fact I now even lean toward the non-rebate product even if it costs more.
At least they are honest with the price. Like the newspaper ad for the car
at only $35,000. When you get to the dealer, "Oh we sold that ONE but we
have others at $40K."

Sounds like you didn't do what was required, that is purchase the
qualifying software. What's the scam?
What is 'Sandisk Micro Cruzer'?

Only $35,000 for a car?I wanted to buy a Fiat Punto Van, which is necessary
for me (to carry all my equipment for work) and it cost 12,000 euro, which I
find outrageous for a professional's car.And it was the smallest
displacement version, and gas, not diesel!

Perhaps a complaint to your local BBB would be in order. Especially since you
have the original rebate form (which I presume says that the product does indeed
qualify).
Actually, your local state or federal consumer relations/protection agency may
also be interested in such questionable practices too.

This doesn't really tell us much.
What rebate form? What did it say?
Was there an ad that advertised this combation with a rebate? If so,
why didn't Office Depot make good on it?
We understand you're upset, but without the details, we can't make any
determinations on whether you were ripped off or not.

While I'm not crazy about rebates, I've gotten the check from every one I've
sent in. Allways follow the instruction to the T. A few years back, there
were scams. If you followed the instructions properly, I would complain.

I don't often have a problem getting a rebate, but I did with a Symantec rebate on a product I got
at CompUSA. Symantec pointed out that I didn't it buy the product during the rebate period. I took
that nessage to the CompUSA store, with their receipt that clearly said it was eligible for the
rebate. The store paid me the amount of the rebate.

Kodak did this to me three times. After sending UPC, invoice ... just
nothing. The rebate was 10$C for three rolls of film so I guessed the
long distance calls would eat up much of it. From now on every time
shopping at walmart I head straight to the Fuji section.

I had a problem with a rebate from best buy on a hitachi hard drive. They
had a sign showing the "price after rebate" and my receipt showed the item
was entitled to a rebate and also had a copy of the rebate receipt. When
hitchi said the item wasn't valid for a rebate I calmly went to best buy
and asked why their receipt shows this as being a rebate item and hitachi
said it wasn't, best buy refunded the difference. I bet if you CALMLY go to
office depot and ask (don't get all pissy), they will work something out
with you. Go down there all hot and pissed and they won't do ANYTHING.

Greetings Thitilir,
Sorry to you did not get to take advantage of a special offer? Can you send
me your particulars? I will review and see what happened. We certainly do
not want you to go away unhappy. Of course there may be a chance that for
whatever reason, the offer did not work for you. I will try to sort it out
for you.
Talk to you soon,

Hello Mr Baird:
Thanks for the offer, but it's been a long time. I threw away all the
records.
Once I can forgive and forget, but three times ??!

Same thing happened to me, Kodak claimed I had not sent the UPC... Pepsi did
the same too, I drink Coke.

Hi Ron,
Sandisk Micro Cruzer is thumb drive (USB drive).
The scam was that Office Depot printed out the rebate form clearly
saying that purchasing TurboxTax and the SanDisk qualified for the
rebate (I saw ad on Los Angeles Times on Thanksgiving so I went to buy
TurboTax and thumb drive), but SanDisk refused to honor the rebate by
telling me that it's not qualified. I did everything that was required
and made a copy. I sent complain to Office Depot but no use. So I am
going to follow Stacy's suggestion to go to Office Depot to ask.
I have sent many rebate forms but this is the first time I got conned.
Kodak has better service since they have people monitoring the net.

I got similarly screwed by Lexar. I bought a SD card from Adorama,
then they sent me this note:
>> Thank you for contacting Lexar. We're sorry for the
inconvenience that our rebate has caused you. The reason why you were
denied was because Amazon was not authorized to run the Shoot Like a
Pro rebate promotion and neither was Adorama. Please follow up with
Adorama if they were posting this rebate illegally on their site. For
a list of authoized retailers please go to www.rebate-zone.com/lexar. If you have further questions, please contact 866-251-9541. <<
Of course Adorama is prominantly listed as a dealer. I'm done with
Lexar.
