Our small business has a Netgear FVS318 Broadband ProSafe VPN Firewall Router (ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/fvs318_ref_manual_14.pdf). One of our employees is abusing his internet priveleges i.e. spending too much time on, etc. I know how to shut off his internet access completely via the web-based router firewall. The problem is that we have a network printer that is hooked up to the router and if I disable his internet access, he won't be able to print.
Question: is there a way to just disable his ability to go on the internet and stop instant messaging but keep his ability to print to our network printer which is also connected to the router?
i dont know that specific router but most dont have the capability you are looking for. there is probly some 3rd party software you could install on his machine but its probly not free. none of my bussiness but if the guy isnt doing his job why is he still working there?
go tell your alien brothers, that ronnie cordova says they're gay!!! <A HREF="http://sockbaby.com" target="_new"> sock baby </A>
Actually, after reading the manual, I found that I can block access to various ports of which port 80 is for HTTP. I did this and it did pretty much what I wanted. Stopped access to web pages but still allows email and access to our network printer.
He is on very thin ice and after I do this, he'll either quit or start earning his pay. If not, he'll be gone. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I suggest the old fashion "face to face" approach where you actually talk to the person and explain to them that they're spending too much time on the internet and it's going to cost them their job unless they earn their pay..
I find that it normally works a lot more than taking away internet access..because now you have a guy who is going to spend all his time trying to figure out why his internet is gone and how he can find a way around it.. which he won't, but some people who are determined to do the impossible.. so they never quit trying...
