I have a GTX 280 and I was wondering how it holds up to today's graphics cards. And which is the best bang for the buck.

Also if i should stick with Nvidia or go with AMD

Screen resolution? And do you plan to upsize anytime soon?

Budget? The GTX280 is a pretty decent card still being able to max out most games at most resolutions with respectable frame rates.

What else is in your machine right now?

My screen res is 1680 x 1050. What do you mean by upsize?

Hmm budget $200-$300 I guess

Its a pretty out dated computer but I have:

4GB DDR2 800mhz
E8400
2TB HDD

Im planning on building a new one from scratch.

When I say upsize, I mean do you plan to get a bigger monitor anytime soon?

If you're going to upgrade anything then you should look at upgrading the central processor - the E8400 is pretty low now.

Im sticking with my monitor that I have.

I know the the CPU is old which is why I want to do a brand new build on everything I currently have.

e8400 is a good cpu you will just be limited in games that utilize quads such as bfbc2 or bf3, the gtx 280 is about as powerful as a 6850/6870, id say keep what you have for now and save for a new build, there will be some interesting releases in the next few months.

The GeForce GTX 280 would fit in between the HD 5830 1024M and the GTX 460 1024M in the following relative performance chart. The Performance per Dollar chart is from May 17th 2011. Charts are from TechPowerUp.com's Video Cards Review site.

yeah its a tough call although If I did not have my gtx 570 I probably would be upgrading before the new gpu launches, probably november or beginning of the new year for amd and shortly after that for nvidia imo, but the performance gains to be had by next gens chips is all speculating at this point
