Hi. I'm hoping some D1 owners can answer a few questions for me. I've been
looking for a good used (and cheap) DSLR and my local camera shop has
advertised a used "mint" D1 kit for $550.00 I plan to go check it out later
this week, maybe take a few shots with it.
I'm interested in this camera because I have a really old Nikon F Photomic
and some manual lenses. The review stated that any F mount lens is
compatible with the camera, but exposure is limited to aperture-only or
manual. (I assume I would have to stop down the lens manually to meter).
That's OK with me. I like manual cameras. If the camera suits, I will at
least have some lenses to start with.
I have read about the D1 at dpreview.com. It seems suited to photojournalism
use because of the high frame rates. It was obviously designed for
professionals.
First question, what came in the original D1 kit? Just body, battery and
charger? Or did some include a lens? (There is no lens or software mentioned
in the ad, but it's apparently in the original box).
Secondly, with a resolution of ~3 MP, what kind of print sizes can I
reasonably expect? 4X6 prints should compare to that of 35mm film cameras,
correct? I would like to machine print 5X7 or max 8X10. (The shop owner has
displays of 20X30 prints taken with his 6 MP DSLR which look amazing). I
don't need that kind of resolution.
I'm planning to do some commercial work soon and I don't want to hassle with
film at this point. My present digital camera is a Canon A75, which I think
it great, but would not pass as "professional" for the work I plan to do.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Excellent deal, if it's around here and you don't want it, I'll take it.

No lens. It did come with some software.

The 8x10's will be fine, far better than what you'll get with any of
those higher-pixel compact p/s digicams, because of the D1's large
sensor. Not quite as good as what you'd get from a newer DSLR. Watch
out for weirdness in purple-colored objects, and banding in the
images. Also, the D1 being Nikon's first DSLR, had some user
interface quirks that were fixed in later models. But the D1 was
still a workhorse for lots of professionals.

Old non-Ai lenses cannot be used on the D1 unless they have been converted
to Ai.

8x10 is pushing it. But it depends on the subject. Fine regular patterns
and sharp diagonal edges tend to show that 2.7 Mpixel may not be enough for
that size.
