Hey, anyone see the newest Consumer Reports ? Looks like HP tops the charts
for Inkjet printing. 5 out of the top 6 are HP. The bottom ones are all
Epson. lol... Canon just below the HP ones.

One assumes that these reports are based on printing documents in the
office, and kid's homework projects. Do you have a serious link to
confirm the above for photo printing?

Is a Corolla a better car than a Maserati? It is cheaper, more reliable and
gets better gas mileage.
Which would you rather have?
This is the mindset of Consumer Reports and has been for decades.
I have rarely agreed with any of their conclusions about technologic gear if
I was knowledeable about the subject.
I will stay with Epson printers. I have a pretty good Canon printer too but
when it dies I have no plans to buy another. And outside of business laser
printers I cannot understand why anyone would buy an HP printer for any
reason whatsoever.

No surprise. HP does have an experience advantage in the field. My
experiences with HP inkjet printers has been uniformly exemplary. Note
my printers are never turned off. Many inkjet printers will do a print
head cleaning on a timer to prevent clogging.

Considering the popularity of photo printing these days, I can't imagine
that CR neglected to test this area. But then I didn't see the article.

the Corolla. Couldn't afford the insurance on the Maserati!
I agree on CR and high tech stuff. They don't seem to know much about
computers in general, rating ones with easy setup higher than ones with
more power and flexibility. So setup was hard, you only do it once.

That seems to be somewhat at odds with received wisodm w.r.t. photo
printers, that being that HP is third in a two horse race.

Yes. But note that both Roger Clark and Rafe B. like their HP printers...

I don't have any recent experience with them, tbh, I was just somewhat
surprised by the claim, as it seems that they've had quite a hill to climb.

OTOH, I just jumped ship from Epson (clog one more time you cretinous
machine, I dare you), to Canon, and am massively impressed by how far things
have moved since my 1290 was "cutting edge", so I suspect that any current
printer from the 3 of them will give reuslts that most people would be
entirely happy with.

The reasons I chose Canon, rather than sticking with Epson, are clogging and
print speed (and damn, this thing is *fast* even without using Firewire),
but mainly clogging. I must admit that I didn't really consider an HP.

Only is you don't have an HP, and only if that is the ONLY criteria.
Most of us use our printers for printing text and illustrations as well.

What? The specification of the job and the testing of the product to
see if it does the job? Yep.

Have you done the kind of cross-product extensive testing? My only
complain has been that the products tend to change so fast that the
reports are out of date.

I've never found the people doing Consumer Reports to have any idea
about quality products. I'm sure they would have rated a Kodak Pony
135 over a Lecia.

How about you complain about something they actually did rather than a

Great. If I remember (I don't particularly read about cars since I
don't want one) they complained about the repair record. That does not
mean no one should buy it nor does it mean that everyone is a lemon.
Jaguar certainly has not had a reputation for reliability.

For me, HP would be out of the running as long as they use all-in-one
color cartridges. My current Epson uses them, and I'm probably going
to be going Canon soon.

I wish you would not do something like that. I looked. And now I am
reading about external DVD drives, free software, the new Adobe suite,
and the printers. And that is just a start. For those of us with ADD
tabbed browsing on the Web is a horror.

That means that HP printers come with lap belts, crash helmets and
won't roll-over or catch fire if your house burns down.

Sorry to see you've succumbed to the prescribed (by Ford) delusion.

Lifting up the Jagyouare badge and sliding a different bit of tin under
it does not result in a "Truly British bred" automobile.

The above tells me you know nothing about Jaguars and their history
and Ford's relationship to the Marque now.

Sorry to see you've succumbed to the prescribed (by Ford) delusion.

Lifting up the Jagyouare badge and sliding a different bit of tin under
it does not result in a "Truly British bred" automobile.

That may be true in the US. But in Japan Epson and Canon have 85% of the
printer market sewn up - HP has only a single digit share behind Lexmark.

and the still seem to be making those 3 colours in one cart thingies -
very expensive printing.

Also very convenient, and ideal for low volume printing, which is
probably why HP is number one is sales in the US. Different market segment.

Consumer Reports also test peanut butter, vacuums, etc.
When you read professional reviews from photographers you'll learn more.

The new HP Photosmart printers do a nice job of printing photos but their
prints
will ruin instantly if moisture, water or wet fingers touch the prints. The
Canon
PIXMA series (new this year) probably have some of the best image quality
and resolution and their prints are water resistant.

Epson printers are still the choice of professionals since their output is
up their
with the best and they have many more grades of professional quality papers
available.
