Just as title asks, do you all think a soundcard would fit in the small PCI slot? My gtx 580 seems to be right up against it. I would prefer someone who knows for a fact to answer and not just a guess :)

A pci-E x1 will work in any pci-E slot x4,x8,x16 but not in a PCI slot.
A good choice for this may be a xonar DX but needs a 4 pin floppy power feed and sounds awesome. Easily as good as a sound blaster xtreme gamer.

Thank you so much guys I appreciate your help. So if I read correctly, I can actually put the tiny PCIex1 into a PCIex16? I have never heard this (not that I'm a pro) but looking at the slots I can see how this would work. I will try the PCIex1 slot first and if that won't fit, I'll at least know I have other options.

Two more questions:
Will this affect the bandwidth of the graphics card (in a PCIex16 slot)?

and

With a $200 budget what would you recommend?

The 5.1 HT Omega I had my eye on at newegg is gone for some reason, I assume it's because they want to push 7.1 moving forward. 5.1 vs 7.1 asside, what are my top options at this price point?

You'd want to avoid installing a soundcard in a gpu slot = because if you have two - one x16 and the other x8 = your main slot will be x8 if you use the second gpu slot for the soundcard.
