Is it safe to use random proxies from the internet?

I've been trying for a while to figure out the best way to use a proxy so I can browse the Internet anonymously. I've used proxy sites by searching for them on Google, but is there a better way?

I've looked at other sites and went through some of their guides but I cannot find exactly what I need. Should I look at VPN's maybe?

Basically I'm just looking for something that will let me surf websites and message boards, and when I login to a message board, I do not want my actual home IP address displayed. The XB Browser works exactly like this and is just what I need, but I need something else like it because I cannot use the XB Browser anymore.
