If you want more than 2 monitors, you need either an AMD card or 2 Nvidia cards. If you look at AnandTech's benchmarks, a GTX 580 SLI setup is way more expensive than a 6970 CF setup, but only a little more powerful at 1920 x 1080. If you're planning on getting 3 monitors, the AMD cards will surpass the 580s thanks to their larger frame buffers.

This thread has some interesting builds. You can get a 6990/6970 setup for $2000, but it will be noisy. Better would be my 6970 CF build with plenty of room for over clocking.

We will probably have some more information on next-gen graphics card by December, so you might end up changing your mind.

It's way too early to be starting a thread on here for a build planned in December. You want to start your build thread a week or less before you plan to buy. There's the new PCI-E 3.0 generation cards due out around December that will be supported by Ivy Bridge cpu's due out in April/May.

Here's what a single monitor build could look like if you were to do it today. That Corsair case just came out on newegg a few days ago and they come with everything but the kitchen sink. Multiple fan controllers, great cooling/ventilation, option to add more fans, dust filters, front USB 3.0 ports, etc...

Also I changed my mind about the tri monitor setup....I want to have the best fos possible. So maybe just one semi bigger 1080p monitor. Any recommendations? And if I do one monitor than a high end 580 would be good right?

I get great FPS in maxed out Deus Ex at 5760 x 1080 with a single 6950 2GB card.

Good find, PC Power and Cooling always makes good PSUs.

Why would you get a third 580? Scaling isn't that great, just upgrade to the next-gen cards.

The Lightning 580 is supposed to be nice and quiet and give you more overclocking headroom; basically the best single GPU card out there. I'm sure it will be able to max BF3 at 1080p.

Well there's like a 40$ difference. Maybe I should play at a better resolution then? What's the next up? I only wanna plan on like a 24" monitor because I heard it's better for gaming. Do 24" monitors go higher than 1080p? Sorry I'm a nub when it comes to monitors lol

Get a pair of 6950s or 6970s, spend the saved cash on 2 more 1080p monitors to play at 5760 x 1080.

Who are you people? This post is a good example -- on the one hand we have (a teenager?) who is worried about a $40 increase...and yet it's a 2K purchase.

I suspect teens or fat guys in basements are submitting dream systems.

Wtf dude? Read my post over again. I said there's a 40$ difference between the 1.5GB version and 3GB version so I might as well just get the 3GB version...in no way am I worried about 40 bucks... Gtfo

So two 6970s if I wanna go multi monitor or two 580 lightnings if I wanna go single monitor? I kinda wanna just go single monitor but go higher resolution. What do you recommend?

Some people like just having one big monitor. I don't have experience with that, but I have been playing Deus Ex at 5760 x 1080 across 3 monitors and it is definitely awesome. It helps in games like BF3 because you can see more at once. You should check out some YouTube videos to see if the bezels will be too much of a downside for you. Since you won't be looking directly at the side monitors, I don't think it will be a big deal, but who knows?
