I've read some reviews but no sure how true they are. Not wanting to
start a war here but how do you like the g6 and is it at least average
or better compared to other 7+ megapixel cameras nowadays? I'll be
using it mostly for home use, parties and graduations. Is it okay for
a few rapid picture taking (not sports)? Realistically, how large of
prints can I expect to make outa this camera (portraits)?
Also, is the shoe on top of this camera universal for any external
flash? I've got a external flash I've used for a kodak DC 4800 and
would like to use it on the g6.

I might add, I'm not concerned with it's movie capabilities, just
still camera capabilities.

No. It is too good for your applications. Take a cheaper one.

G6's are very nice cameras; but it's true, it may be more than what you
need. They're a bit more complex to operate, and you'll have to have a
bit of photography experience to get really good pics from it.
For "snapshots" only you might want a Canon A95 or A520 instead - half
the price, smaller, lighter, AA batteries and CF (A95) or SD (A520)
memory. If you really need the megapixels, look at the Canon S70 or
especially the SD500 - both really nice cameras that produce great
results without a lot more than "Pointing and Shooting". There are lots
of others - in the cheaper range the Fuji A330 and A340 were good, if
you can find them. The Nikon 3200 is also good, as is the Olympus D580.

I have one and it is a very good camera. On the plus side, is the hotshoe
for an external flash. It works with Canon or Canon compatible flashes
only. I have a Canon 550EX and indoor pictures are very well illuminated
with this flash, it looks stupid because the flash is about twice as big as
the camera.
Another plus is the fast lens (f2-f3) and the full manual controls. I also
like the status panel on top of the camera and most times I don't have the
LCD turned on using the status panel for adjustments and the optic
viewfinder for framing. The battery lasts a long time BTW and it's the same
as my bigger camera (Canon 10D).
The minus side is the size, it is not as small as an A95 and not so easy to
carry in a pocket. Just like all cameras with a smaller sensor size, there
is more and more noise as ISO is bumped up.
Check the full size pictures on DPreview, you will not be dissapointed with
the quality.

Nothing like the Powershot G6 though. Local Radio Shacks still
have Fuji A330's but their price the same as another store (either
B&H or J&R) is charging for the A340. There's also an A345 and
unless I'm mistaken, an A350.
