Just wondering how to overclock the card to get a better benchmark. And which program I should use to keep the settings without resetting everytime I reboot/.

i7 2600k
Sapphire HD 6870
OCZ vertexz 3 120Gb
Hitachi 1Tb 6.0Gb
Thermaltake CLP0575 130mm CPU Cooler (now this is one mean cooler, never get above 55 when oc'd and benchmarking @ 4.5) and idles below 32
Antec New Truepower 750w PSU
Raidmax Smilodon case
2 x 4Gb "G Skill 2133 ram
A couple DVD+/-RW's
Multi cxard reader
GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD4 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0

Also, is there any way to break the 45 or 46 multiplier barrier? I would this thing to hit 5.0Gh.

In a nutshell, you start by increasing the core clock and add voltage if and when necessary. Disclaimer- Of course, do so at your own risk.

The most popular program is MSI Afterburner due to the options, flexibility, and monitoring/feedback:

It's a great program for this purpose. There are many forums/guides for different cards out there:

Got my XFX 6870 dual fan running 975MHz / 1175MHz at stock voltage perfectly stable. Have run 1000MHz / 1200MHz with voltage at 1200 but most games crash after 10-15 mins. Both using MSIAfterburner.
Don't really want to up the voltage any but if there's enough people running at safe increases to reach 1000MHz / 1200MHz I'll damn sure be up to try again.

Use the program from Sapphire.... Trixx ! It's the best for OCing sapphire cards !

The XFX HD 6870.
Fan speed at 45% when OC'd, 35% when not, I play at 1280*1024 so I don't really need to overclock anyways.

my XFX dual fan 6870 won't run completely stable at 1000MHz core. i figure the voltage needs a lil bumb but many others say theres runs fine at stock 1174. tried changing voltage with MSIAfterburner but can't. accesses the voltage but doesn't change actual #s in GPUID or GPU gadget.

975MHz seems to be the highest with no problems, anything over and FurMark 1.9.1 turns to white screen and shuts down the Burn-In test. doesn't crash system or cause any screen problems. even ingame over 975MHz the games will just freeze and close to the desktop. all my old cards would get crazy artifacts and crash whole system when OC'd too far. nice change.
