I3 2100 vs Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

I am looking to buy a Processor, and these two fit my budget.

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.1 Ghz

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @3.4 Ghz

They are going for around the same price here [$120].
I am going to use it along with a EVGA GTX 560 Ti SC.

Which one out of the two will be a better buy? Will any of them bottelneck the 560 Ti?

And if the AMD one is better, please also tell a budget mobo with which I can overclock the X4 965
P.S. - I have no idea about AMD CPUs.

  1. The 965 will have the edge when multitasking/threading kicks in but the I3 in all single threaded apps.

I'd go with the 955 and OC it if you don't worry about the power consumption. The i3 is slightly more powerful in gaming but once you OC the 955 they are pretty even. The 955 will have an edge in all other things due to having 4 cores.

would be good enough for OC
  3. Will the i3 2100 bottleneck a GTX 560 Ti?

I am currently leaning towards the i3 because I see that it is better in gaming and that is my only concern.
  4. niether will bottleneck the 560 ti.
  5. Thanks a lot!
    I'll go with the i3

  7. The i3 could be upgraded in the future if you get a decent mobo but won't really OC. The AMD could do better with a nice OC but you won't be able to upgrade the CPU with the same mobo in the future. An aftermarket heatsink might be worthwhile for the AMD too if you OC it.
  8. I have both Cpu's I3-2100 & P-II x4 970 it's confusing when I see so much review's in favoir of I3 & test,bench that say I3 is the winer,but in reality that's not the case,both config's are paired with 2x4gb HyperX Genesis 1600 9-9-9-27 in dual chanel & ASUS 6870 DC + WD Black sata3 500gb & Win7-SP1/64bit,nothing is overcloked & Phenom's based config performs much better in games & almost in everything!
  9. Phenom ii x4 965BE because it is a quad core!
  10. 965 is better. 50% cheaper, 10% at best difference between them.
