Processor upgrage

Hello,
I have Gateway 4200-09, with a amd phenom 1.86 ghz processor. What upgraded processors can I use in this motherboard, to help make use of the maxed out 8 gbs of ram? I have an AM2. Can I upgrade to an AM3 or better, or do I need to swap out the motherboard?

you can upgrade to an am3 cpu as long as you can update your bios but it would still not use 8 gigs of ram unless you have a 64 bit os.

you are also limited to cpu which your motherboard will support after you update bios, which would probably mean you can get an athlon II x4.
