AMD FX-4100 - worth purchase?

Hi,

I was browsing through the web for some hardware deals today and came over something what should be called a super-offer from one of my local dealers. They were advertising a big sale offer on a AMD FX processor which was going to be revealed at precisely 1:37pm (go figure :)). When I checked back, I finally got to see what it was.

AMD FX-4100 -50% OFF! (Original price: ~$140 -> New price: ~$70)

quantity: 100 left!

only one per household!

In less than 30 min they were all sold out! I couldn't help but to get one myself so this leads to my question. I've read that this cpu and BD as a whole has been, shall we say, not as good as we would have hoped (lightly put). The old 955, which is also listed at the same orig. price $140, is said to be better and that it is not really a quad-core but performs more like a dual-core.
I am going to be doing some light gaming, browsing, watching movies etc. Anyways, for half price, the 4100 should be a steal, wouldn't you say?

  1. For $70 it is a good deal for the performance that you are getting. Overall I would prefer a Phenom II CPU because of slightly better performance, but what are the chances of buying a new Phenom II for $70?
  2. They couldn't get me to use a Bulldozer if they gave it away for free. :pfff: :pfff:
  3. The thing is though, I couldn't find any extensive reviews on the 4100 here on toms hardware (only on the architecture BD).

    What (if any) would be the equivalent cpu from AMD (am3 socket) and Intel, compared to the 4100?
  4. its worth it for $70, the processor performs better than anything below $100.

    the 4100 would be comparable to a 955 ph II x4 and somewhat equal to and i3.

    Depending on what you do, it's similar to a Phenom II 955. Gaming favors the Phenom II, but applications they trade blows.
