Asus M2A-VM HDMI Memory Slot 4 problem?

With apologies if this issue has been raised before:
I'm trying to install 2x1GB RAM sticks on my Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard. It currently has 2x1GB in (so should be 4x1GB altogether). It doesn't work and the machine hangs on the boot screen. I've tried each new stick separately in slot 3 and they work, but not with both in.
Is it likely that there is an issue with slot 4 on my board, or is there some secret setting I need to change in order to get all slots to work?
I may be clutching at straws with hoping there's a setting to change, but any help would be much appreciated.

  1. I would try to clean slots A2-B2 with a high grade isopropyl alcohol. Unplug computer from wall outlet, use a soft bristle toothbrush (new),be careful of ESD, and gently brush along the slot, wait for alcohol to dry and install memory modules.
