So apparently I made the mistake of buying an i7-860 setup. In the moment it was the best avenue cost wise and gaming efficiency wise. I've only had the set-up a little over a year now and I am more than happy with it. The problem is I want to get another gpu for my setup to take advantage of quad crossfire because I know some games are already testing my HD5970. I can't really do that when I'm limited to 8x on the second PCI-e lane, and yes I'm one of those people that if it's not all set on ultra high settings for everything I get really bad OCD and need it to be ultra high.
So my question is what's the most cost effective way of switching out the least amount of hardware to accomodate 16x/16x lanes and increase performance all around.
Well I was under the impression I was using 16x for the one card. Once putting two in it would become 8x/8x? I guess I should have rephrased that. Haha well I can run all games pretty well. I am running a 1920x1200 resolution though and that could be affecting performance slightly. I notice that the 5970 will give me problems with Metro 2033, and GTAIV when all settings are set to the highest with icenhancer 1.25 mod installed. I'm liking this idea of grabbing a 5870 for tri CFX but I'm not sure the performance increase would be worth the added energy bill. How much of an increase are we talking when adding a 5870? How is the scaling? And would i start to see a bottleneck with the cpu having 3 gpus. The only thing I overclock is the cpu. I have it set to 3.33 right now. thanks guys!
