HELP: My small icons are all black

I have an annoying problem. All my small icons are black. If I choose to view my icons in "large icons" they're fine, but when they're "small icons" they're always black. I'm running win98 SE 256mb duron 600, asus a7v

Also, I have another computer where the icons are all very tightly packed next to one another. This is a problem when i set the view to "large icon". running win98 SE 256mb cyrix m2 300, and generic socket 7

Any help would be greatly appreciated
