I have a HP M2N78-LA (Viola) motherboard and I want to upgrade my CPU to at least dual-core. But unfortunately, all shops here have no AM2/AM2+ CPUs, only AM3. So can this AMD Athlon II X2 250 (AM3) work on my mobo?
This is what is said about your cpu upgrade :

Processor upgrade information
Socket type: AM2+
TDP: 125 watt
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
Phenom with Quad Core (Agena) technology 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9700 (up to 125 watt)
Phenom with Triple-Core (Toliman) technology 8xxx series (AM2+) up to 8xxx (up to 125 watt)
Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology (AM2) up to 6400+ (up to 125 watt)
I think you can upgrade to am3 processor.
I gona say no, you have DDR2 motherboard, newer AM3 CPU is for DDR3 system (*memory controller on CPU, think makes it impossible)
find used one maybe, that you know will work for sure
I ran into the same problem about a two years ago. My board was an AM2+ board and I made the mistake of buying a AM3 CPU after discovering my board didn't officially support it. After performing several Google searching I found out in order to get the CPU to work correctly I'd have to set the CPU multiplier, voltage and buss manually. So I wouldn't say it's impossible for you to make it work but buying a new motherboard would be the better option.

Thanks man! I just buy a new motherboard so that there'll be no problems in compatibility. It was just last Christmas when I saw a shop selling an AM2 CPU, but I had no money that day. Now I have the money but the CPU is gone.
